California African American Museum Holds Fifth Annual Program Connecting Children with Authors
An array of renowned children’s book authors and craftspeople will come together to promote the joy of reading and writing at a free program hosted by the California African American Museum (CAAM) on Saturday, December 16, 2006, from 1-4:00 pm. The program, Ears are Burning, Children are Learning, now in its fifth year, was specially created to celebrate National Children’s Book Week and to encourage literacy among children. The activities are designed for the entire family, young and senior alike. Celebrity children actors Tequan Richmond (Everybody Hates Chris) and Khleo Thomas (Holes) are both slated to appear at the event to inform and entertain the audience about the importance of literacy. An afternoon at CAAM of storytelling and workshops begins at 1:00 pm as children will get hands-on experience writing and illustrating their own Christmas cards with Joyce Clarke, transforming books into unique expressions of art with fine artist Elliott Pinkney, learning paper making techniques with artist and museum curator Mar Hollingsworth, making one-of-a-kind 3D wrap doll bookmarks with Angela Briggs, designing pop-up books with Wanda Clark, molding paper pots with Fernando Vargas and creating paper scrolls with David Orozco. In addition, published authors/illustrators will read their own stories aloud and discuss with children what inspires them to write. This year’s participants include:
Synthia Saint James - international award winning artist and designer of the United States Postal Stamp for the Kwanzaa holiday, has to date written and/or illustrated 13 children’s picture books, three poetry and prose books, three children’s activity books, and a cookbook. She has garnered several awards including a Parent’s Choice Silver Honor for her book Sunday, a Coretta Scott King Honor for illustrating Neeny Coming…Neeny Going, and an Oppenheim Gold Award for the book To Dinner For Dinner, which she illustrated. Saint James will read from her book Hallelujah: A Christmas Story.
Brenda C. Roberts is the author of Jazzy Miz Mozetta, a tale whose moral proves that there is still magic in the old song and dance; Miz Mozetta and her cast of friends cross generational barriers to prove it. With the publication of her critically acclaimed middle-grade novel, The Golden Hour, Maiya Williams changed the face of adventure books. The Golden Hour features two African-American children as its main characters, a rarity in this genre. Maiya is a writer and producer for Mad TV. She was an editor and vice president of the Harvard Lampoon, and a writer for the TV shows Rugrats and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Young and full of energy, 14-year-old actor Tequan Richmond has taken Hollywood by storm. In 2004, Tequan appeared as a young Ray Charles, Jr. in the film Ray. In the fall of 2005, Tequan landed the role of Drew Rock as a series regular in the hit television comedy Everybody Hates Chris. Winter 2006-2007 looks to be promising for this youngster with two new movies Charlotte’s Web, in which he plays the role of a pig named Uncle with Julia Roberts and the film adaptation of The Celestine Prophecy. Khleo Thomas has a definite passion for acting. Khleo recently made the outstanding "Black Stars Rising: 10 Young African-Americans to Watch" by AOL’s Film Fixation. From digging holes as ‘Zero’ with Sigourney Weaver and John Voight in Walt Disney’s Holes to MGM’s Walking Tall opposite "The Rock," this promising young actor proves that he has what it takes as an actor/entertainer. Khleo recently wrapped the lead male role in Persistent Entertainments’ feature The Beautiful Ordinary. In 2005, he released Roll, Bounce and Dirty, starring opposite Academy Award® winner Cuba Gooding, Jr.
The reading program will run from 1-4:00 pm and the workshops run from 1:00-3:30pm. There will be periodic give-aways for guests and authors will be available to sign their books. Guests may bring their own books from home or feel free to purchase from an array of children’s books that will be sold on site through EsoWon Books. By far, most vocal response to this film that Hollywood Jesus has received has come from girls aged eight to sixteen. The last time I saw anything like this was in 2003, with the release of another Walden Media film: Holes. Hollywood Jesus was indundated at that time by hosts of young girls raving about Khleo Thomas, wanting to congratulate Khleo Thomas, telling Khleo that they, too, wanted someday to be an actor?maybe even marry him.

Hef's 2006 Midsummer Night's Dream bash on August 10th was totally off the hook, headlined by a frenetic set featuring rap superstar Bow Wow and running buddy Khleo Thomas. For Hef's biggest and sexiest annual party, the Mansion's backyard and Grotto were transformed into a grape-draped, Greek god-themed love playground of Olympic proportions with Hef and girlfriends Holly, Bridget and Kendra taking front row center among the sea of cushions and throw pillows. The party drew lots of first-time Hollywood faces, like elusive Talladega Nights stars Sacha Baron Cohen (a.k.a. Ali G) and Michael Clarke Duncan, in addition to Click scene-stealer David Hasselhoff and the stars of the much-anticipated fall NBC series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Steven Weber and Matthew Perry. Scores of scantily clad Playmates, Cyber Girls and aspiring models cavorted with Mansion mainstays Paris and Nicky Hilton, Nicky's beau Kevin Connelly of HBO's Entourage, Verne Troyer, Thora Birch and Crispin Glover.

Brie Larson, Alexa Vega, Khleo Thomas and Sean Marquette are shooting "The Beautiful Ordinary," being directed by newcomer Jessica Manafort. Larson ("Hoot") will play a cynical junior high student who would rather smoke pot than go to school. Thomas ("Roll Bounce") will play the school badass who gets all the girls, while Vega "Spy Kids" will play a school slut. Marquette will portray an enterprising pot dealer.

May 7, 2003 Often, when we say that a star comes from out of nowhere, it's a bit of an exaggeration. An "out of nowhere" actress probably has a few supporting roles in movies and perhaps a TV series in her background; an "out of nowhere" band has the record company publicity machine behind it and a couple years of touring under its belt. But when we say that actor Khleo Thomas has come from out of nowhere, we really mean the guy has come from out of nowhere. Young fans of the film Holes, particularly young female fans, are making a big fuss over the 14-year-old actor. Thomas was getting no searches whatsoever four weeks ago, got a few in the second week of April, and then saw interest triple, double, and double yet again in the last three weeks. Thomas plays the troubled inner-city orphan Zero in Holes, and it is his first major role and only second overall. According to the Internet Movie Database, Thomas' only previous movie appearance was as "Bad Boy #1" in Friday After Next. Not the kind of thing that launches a star career, is it? So perhaps Thomas is one of those young actors who is finally graduating to films after years on teen-oriented sitcoms, like Hilary Duff or Amanda Bynes. Actually, no, his only TV role was a one-episode part on the forgettable NBC Saturday morning show City Guys. And yet, Khleo Thomas is the breakout star of the summer movie season so far. He's getting eight times as many searches as Shia LaBeouf, who plays the film's main character Stanley Yelnats. If that doesn't impress, try this ridiculous fact: Last week Thomas received more searches than the far better known adult actors Colin Farrell and Hugh "Wolverine" Jackman. Thomas' next move is unknown -- he isn't listed in the cast of any major movies in development, and he doesn't even have a fansite yet. But you can find pictures of him here. He sure is dreamy.

Irma P Hall (Soul Food) and Khleo Thomas (Holes) Host Filmmakers and Movie Lovers At the 22nd Annual Chicago International Children?s Film Festival?s Closing Night Ceremony

Chicago, IL ? The 22nd Annual Chicago International Children?s Film Festival?s closing ceremony was full of fun and surprises as Master of Ceremonies, Irma P. Hall (Soul Food) and co-host, Khleo Thomas (Holes, The Golden Blaze) awarded not one, but two films - My Brother is a Dog (Germany, 2004) by Peter Timm and Pelican Man (Finland, 2004) by Liisa Helminen - the coveted, Best of Fest award, along with other prizes and awards determined by the children?s and adult juries.

In addition to hosting this year?s closing night awards ceremony, during the Festival, Irma P. Hall attended a screening of Proud to be Me: Stories of African American Children and spoke with over 100 Chicago children afterwards about this series of short films that celebrates the achievements of African American kids, and about growing up as an African American in today?s society. Closing night ceremony co-host, young actor Khleo Thomas (Holes and The Golden Blaze) who did the voice of Jason/ Sure Shot in The Golden Blaze, was happily surprised when his film won first prize for the Children?s Jury Prize ? Animated Feature Film or Video, and he graciously accepted the award on behalf of director, Bryon E. Carson.

New NBC Sitcom 'Teachers' reveiw

Teachers I momentarily had to stop trying to save Lisa Tucker's Idol career to watch this new sitcom, which appropriately aired after Scrubs. Why was this an appropriate time slot, you ask? Well it's a Matt Tarses creation ? he's a coexecutive producer on the aforementioned comedy. And the very first thing that came to mind before I knew that little nugget of information was that this is just like Scrubs but set in a school and with a laugh track. So for a series premiere, I have to say that it was OK, although there were no major guffaws or even a loud ha! But I managed several half-laughs. Seriously, if you want to make me more than chuckle these days, you either have to be Scrubs, Arrested Development, The Office or Barney on How I Met Your Mother. So to have several half-laughs, it's something. The cast is likable. In the beginning I wasn't so sure about the J.D. "I don't take anything seriously but I really do" of this bunch (Jeff Cahill played by Justin Bartha), but you know what? By the time the end came around (you know, at that point where it reaches its Scrubs-esque sappy-end-of-the-episode-moment), I got on board with him. It's always good to see Kenny (aka Buuuuuud) from The Cosby Show, and the jury's out on the actress from the English (meaning good) version of Coupling. I have to add a major shout-out to the show's Kali Rocha; you know I love me some Buffy the Vampire Slayer so seeing Halfrek as a cast member was way cool. Lately, I've been seeing her as a guest star on various shows like Without a Trace and Grey's Anatomy, so congrats on the regular gig. All in all, Teachers isn't innovative sitcom television, and it doesn't feature the classic 38 Special "Teacher Teacher" tune as a theme song, but it seems to have potential. ? Bettina Charles

About Teachers (New NBC Sitcom)
"It?s the Boston Public of Middle Schools on NBC. Filmore Middle is an at-risk school for pre-teens, and the show follows it?s teachers and students, including Adam, who is pulled directly from Rushmore and is the founder and president of Filmore?s many clubs and who puts on ambitious plays."

Dirty - On casting Rita and Splooge

Fisher says the hardest two roles to cast were Splooge and Rita, the two young lovers who each in their own way become victims of Salim and Sancho?s callous cruelty. The parts eventually went to Khleo Thomas (Holes, Baadasssss!) and Aimee Garcia (?Cadet Kelly,? A Lot Like Love).

?We saw more people for those two roles than for all the other roles put together. I probably read 100 girls for Rita. When Aimee came in, she made me and the casting director cry. I gave her the role right away. It was very similar with Khleo. He just came in and nailed it.? Fisher says he was particularly pleased with the chemistry between the two actors despite the fact that Garcia is nearly a decade older than Thomas. ?When you see them together you think they are lovers who were always meant to be.?

Producer David Hillary has similar praise for Thomas and Garcia. ?Khleo and Aimee are two of the most talented young actors I?ve ever had the pleasure of working with. They add so much to the redemptive reach of the story. They?re really the hope of the film.?

Thomas often does his own stunts on set, can impersonate just about anyone and is mean competition in any skateboarding park. Thomas lives in Los Angeles with what he calls, "the perfect parents."

(An article from the Holladay Jam Tour)Finally Bow Wow stayed out to perform some more. The whole time he?d been talking to the crowd, there was a little contest between the parts of the arena, but of coarse my side, the right side, was the loudest. Later he tested the crowd on how well they knew him. He sang some of his older songs/hits and honestly, I had no idea how they went. Until he got the started ?Bow wow wow Yippee Yo Yippee Yay, where my dogs at?? I knew that one. Then he brought us something new. A song with him, Khleo Thomas, and a new girl we?d never seen before rapping. I was surprised Khleo Thomas was good, he?s fine too. The song was hot but I don?t know the name of it. After they finished that the girl that came out showed off her rapping skills. She mentioned in it that she was Bow Wow?s little sister, which I though was ironic because she was taller and thicker then him. Finally they ended with a song called ?Mo Money?. Personally, I didn?t want to hear about the rich getting richer but I bared through it. Finally he ended rapping his song ?Thank You? telling us he wouldn?t be here without his fans, and the crowd ate it up.

Dirty Synopsis(Just added!)

In a city ravaged by violent crime, the police department's anti-gang task force uses any means at its disposal to get the bad guys off the streets, with cops often acting as judge, jury and executioner. As the unit's self-justifying brutality and corruption spiral further out of control, gang member-turned-cop Armando Sancho (Clifton Collins Jr.) begins to question the life he and his partner Salim Adel (Cuba Gooding Jr.) have chosen. So when Internal Affairs agents investigating the division's abuses offer him a deal to come clean about the unit's misdeeds, Sancho must decide whether to heed his conscience or his loyalty to his fellow officers. On the hot, smoggy day Salim and Sancho are scheduled to testify to IA, the two rogue cops agree to run a lucrative, illegal operation for the station's top brass (Keith David and Cole Hauser). As their increasingly bloody mission takes them from one end to the other of the sprawling city they've sworn to protect and serve, Salim and Sancho learn that getting clean isn't nearly as easy as being DIRTY.

From writer-director Chris Fisher (Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders, Nightstalker), comes DIRTY, an edgy, suspenseful and action-packed story about a day in the life of two corrupt cops going for one final score. An adrenaline-fueled urban drama set in a decaying American metropolis, DIRTY cuts through the thin blue line between police corruption, gang violence and street justice.

A Silver Nitrate Production DIRTY starring Cuba Gooding Jr., and Clifton Collins Jr. The film also stars Cole Hauser, Wyclef Jean, Keith David and Taboo. The director is Chris Fisher. The film was written by Gil Reavill & Eric Saks and Chris Fisher. The producers are Ash R Shah, David Hillary and Timothy Wayne Peternel. The Executive Producers are Sundip Shah and Barry Brooker. The director of photography is Eliot Rockett. The production designer is Anthony Rivero Stabley. The film is edited by Miklos Wright and Tom Sanders. The costume designer is Johnny Wujek. The visual effects are by DiFarm. Original music is by Ryan Beveridge.

Armando Sancho (Clifton Collins Jr.) is at a crossroads in his young life. Having traded his gang colors for a police uniform, he now finds himself a member of a corrupt anti-gang task force where the cops are as crooked as the criminals they seek to eradicate. Placing themselves above the law, these violent cowboys take justice into their own hands on a daily basis, often with lethal results. Haunted by his involvement in the death of an innocent man, Sancho's once unshakeable faith in the unit's take-no-prisoners approach to policing is stretched to the breaking point. As he contemplates testifying against his fellow officers, Sancho is torn between his newly awakened conscience and his loyalty to his partner, Salim Adel (Cuba Gooding Jr.). An amoral shake-down artist and wannabe player with a taste for hookers, cocaine and chrome wheel rims, Salim is nonetheless Sancho's best friend and the one guy who's always got his back. It's against this tense backdrop that Salim and Sancho begin the day they are to be interviewed by two dogged Internal Affairs agents (Chris Mulkey and Judy Reyes). But no sooner do the partners arrive at the anti-gang unit headquarters for morning roll call than the division Lieutenant (Cole Hauser) sends them back out into the streets with a plum extra-curricular assignment: check a bag of confiscated dope out of the evidence locker and deliver it to a henchman of gangster Damian Baine (Wyclef Jean). Baine offers the partners a split of the take if they raid a gang of amateurish Canadian drug dealers who have muscled in on his turf. Unbeknownst to Salim and Sancho, however, the Canadians are operating under the auspices of Sancho's "first family," a gang run by ruthless Latino crime kingpin Roland (Robert LaSardo). When the raid goes sour and the money disappears, the partners have to answer to the unhappy drug lord.

Drawn into this deadly game against their will are a young streetwise police informant named Splooge (Khleo Thomas) and his girlfriend Rita (Aimee Garcia), whose rough handling at the hands of Salim prompts her to seek the ultimate revenge. As the sweltering day wears on and the body count grows, so does the likelihood that Sancho and Salim will never keep their appointment with Internal Affairs.
